Amazon.com Review
Torque, torque and more torque! This package is nothing but power. The 14.4-volt cordless impact driver and the MForce drill put super strength in your hands for the toughest tasks.

Despite being beastly powerful, this impact driver is shockingly compact and lightweight, with a total length of under 7 inches and weighing in at a mere 3-1/2 pounds including the battery. But don't let that mislead you -- impacts per minute range from 0 to 3,200, with a maximum tightening torque of 1,240 in./lbs. And the power doesn't quit, either, because the nickel-metal-hydride battery packs a greater capacity and longer run time than standard nickel-cadmium versions. Even though it fits snugly in the hand, it's an absolute dynamo in the power department, and the variable speed is smooth as silk.

There are two nifty light-related features on this Makita, and we weren't all that impressed with them on paper. But in reality, the phosphorescent rubber bumper immediately catches your eye, whether you're rummaging in your truck, fumbling in your garage or scanning the job site for any left-behind tools. And the integrated high-output LED really does light up the workpiece, saving you time and frustration. We always like to see tools with easily accessible and easily replaced brushes, because if your tool's in the repair shop, it's not making you any money.

The MForce drill/driver is just as powerful and just as rugged as the impact driver, with the same high-efficiency nickel-metal-hydride battery power. Speed ranges from 0 to 400 and 0 to 1,300 rpm to tackle just about any drilling or driving job, with a Makita-made Shift Lock Drive that lets you switch quickly between modes, locking out the clutch for drilling work. And like the impact driver, the drill in this combo is compact, lightweight and easy on your hardworking body. The rubberized grip absorbs any vibration and feels great in your hand.

The fluorescent worklight will come in handy, too, whether you're in a crawlspace or under an engine. All three pieces are Makita quality, and the price on this combo beats buying them separately. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

5 out of 5 stars I really like this!   May 25, 2010
J. Herring (portland, or)
After having some bad luck with another brand of lithium ion drill, I decided I'd go old school and get a Nickel metal hydride battery drill. The blue model Makitas feel a lot more solid to me than the new 18v LIthium models. I found the three piece 14.4v combo kit with drill, impact driver, and fluorescent worklight for not much more money than the drill alone. That was a no brainer!

The drill is everything I hoped for. Plenty of power for anything I'll do with it. Drives three inch screws into old fir with no problem. Feels really solid, pretty light and fits my hand perfectly. Battery life seems great!

The impact driver is solid, and really compact. The worklight is fantastic. I'm using it for all kinds of jobs. Even the carrying case is nice. Well built and holds everything neatly and securely.

I really like this product, and am looking forward to years of good service!

5 out of 5 stars Don't drop the flashlight   March 21, 2010

Don't drop the flashlight.... having worked in HVAC I had a chance to use everyone's drill till I got one. 15 years later I use nothing but Makita. When I totally wear one out I get another one. Have had this set for 4 years with no problems but the price of the batteries going up. If you drop the flashlight more than 40 times it may start giving you problems. Light last about 2 1/2 hours on a charge.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bargain   February 1, 2010

Superior goods as Makita usually are, plus quick delivery from the Vendor. The light has proven to be much handier than I would have anticipated. - Stagehand Jim

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding kit   January 6, 2010
M. Ross (Orange, CA USA)
I wish I could give this kit six stars. I have been using the drill and driver in this kit since 2005 and have considered them among my most reliable and useful tools. I'll review each component separately:

Case:

The case fits all components well. It has never sprung open, cracked, or broken, despite years of dropping, stepping on, tripping over, and general abuse. Mine had metal clasps- not sure if the new ones are the same or have gone to plastic.

Light:

The light throws off considerable illumination and has really come in handy. It lasts a long time on a full charge. Yes, it would be nice to have a directable beam, as with a flashlight, but after using this I actually prefer the fluorescent tube. It has a nice wire hanger that is very useful and I haven't managed to break the light cover, which is impressive. The only drawback to the fluorescent light is that it dies all at once instead of fading. I discovered that one day in a very dark attic. Bummer. Carry a spare battery if you have to crawl into some dark place.

Impact driver:

Just excellent. This is the tool to have when driving screws of any kind and is fantastic for decking projects and the like. It drives surprisingly well for it's size and battery rating.

Drill:

Outstanding. I have used this daily for years, dropping it from ladders, using as a hammer when I shouldn't have, used it with ridiculously large wood augurs, and overloaded it and abused it at every opportunity. (sorry, drill) It has NEVER let me down. My 18 volt-using friends have always been impressed and surprised at its capability and battery life. I have found it to be sturdy, quiet, powerful, and very well-made. In a word, impressive. The NiMh batteries have been excellent and long lasting. The drill is very well-balanced and has a good feel; the forward/reverse slide button is very easy to actuate while holding the drill. The dual speed is a good feature and you will be surprised at the torque on the low setting. I have enjoyed this drill so much that I found myself using it more often than not when I should have been using the impact driver. Though worn-looking on the outside, the drill still performs reliably, every day, almost like new.

Alas, after using the drill and driver for five years, the batteries are beginning to lose their charge. Not bad, though, after five years of continuous use and occasional abuse. This is a sweet drill and an excellent set if the manufacturing is comparable to that of five years ago when I bought this. (My drill was made in China, by the way. Usually this gives me pause, but everything in this set has been nothing but top-notch) I can recommend this product unequivocally.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kit, Great Price   January 2, 2010

I work as a remodeling contractor and have owned a number of cordless drills. This one is by far my favorite. This kit is usually the first thing onto the job site and the last thing to leave. The drill has enough power to drive 3-4 inch wood screws, install drywall, install decking, and drill holes up to 4". At the same time it's light enough to use with finesse or use overhead. I use the impact driver for installing lag bolts, quickly removing/replacing any hex head screws, and for putting in concrete board with ease. The light is bright and lasts 1hr+. I use it anytime I need more task lighting and especially when working on electrical with the power out. I've replaced the batteries once in the three years I've owned this kit. I've never had any mechanical issues with any of the tools. I have a larger corded drill for mixing thin set and joint compound, but wouldn't expect any cordless to be able to do that. I would buy this drill again in a heartbeat.
