Both bases feature the Bosch Precision Centering Design for accuracy and control.View larger. | Powerful, Variable-Speed Motor with Soft Start Take care of even tough routing jobs with the powerful 2.25 HP/12 Amp motor and its versatile speed range of 8,000 to 25,000 RPM. The variable speed dial allows you to set the optimal speed for the routing task and material. And with built-in Constant Response Circuitry, your router will maintain a constant speed throughout the cut, so you get cleaner, more accurate results. With the integrated soft-start feature, the motor reduces torque upon start-up for a much smoother transition and easier handling on your part. Accurate Fixed and Plunge Base Cuts This versatile kit provides all the components necessary for fixed-depth routing and plunge routing, as well. Microfine bit depth adjustment systems on both bases allow for accurate and fast bit depth adjustments. The microfine adjustment has an overall range of one inch and is accurate to 1/64 inch. Both bases also feature the Bosch Precision Centering Design, which allows the bit to be centered with the subbase or optional template guides. This makes it easier than ever to keep the bit on the intended cutting-line when using guidance devices such as jigs, templates, or dovetail fixtures. Both of the included bases, fixed and plunge, feature quick clamp systems for quick tool-free conversions, so moving the motor between the two bases takes only seconds and requires no tools. The plunge base features soft grip handles for easier operation, and the fixed base includes threaded holes for mounting it to router tables. The fixed base's advanced bit height adjustment system allows you to conveniently adjust the bit height from above the router table. Quick-Change Template Guide Adapter The spring-loaded template guide adapter makes it easy to use your router with Bosch RA-Series template Guides (sold separately) and a number of special accessories and templates for creating ultra-precise repeated patterns, inlays, and more. Rugged Design for Increased Durability The Bosch 1617EVSPK Plunge and Fixed-Base Router Kit is durable and built for years of use. The motor housing and bases are now made of aluminum, and the power switch is now completely dust-sealed for added durability. The rugged carrying case keeps all of the components protected. This routing system is backed by a one-year limited warranty, 30-day money back guarantee, and one-year service protection plan. good motor, poor bases June 26, 2010 Bently Frothingham I've logged several hundred hours with this router, using both bases. I like the motor, with it's variable speed and soft start, and have had no issues with it bogging down or bad switches. Then again, I've only used it on soft woods like fir and redwood, and only rarely used bits over 1.5". My main issues are with the bases. When it was new, it was easy to swap the motor from one to the other, but over time the grooves which hold the motor in place in the bases put deep scratches in the motor sides (the edges of the grooves are pretty sharp), and due to the increased friction, it has become a serious headache switching back and forth.
I have the fixed base mounted in a router table, and do freehand work with the plunge base. I've discovered that the fixed base is obviously not intended to be permanently mounted inverted in a table. When inverted, the only thing which holds the shaft of the fine adjustment screw in place is a tiny little snap ring. This means that when the release lever is open, the entire weight of the router is supported by a thin piece of metal, and when you raise and lower the router with the screw, a lot of force is placed on this thin ring. Over time, the snap ring will deform, and eventually fly off or break, making height adjustment impossible. Setting the bit height exactly is also an issue, as the bit will pivot slightly when the lever is tightened, changing the height by as much as 1/32".
Also, be aware that if you intend to use the motor in a table with a router lift, the motor is not the same diameter as the standard porter cable that most router lifts are designed to fit. Adaptors are available, but then that's one more hassle.
Bosch 1617EVSPK Router April 22, 2010 Paul n. Lajoie (Western Mass.) I bought this combo kit approx. 1 month ago. Sofar I've used the plunge base to make "butterflies" (with a template) on a A & C style sideboard/buffet, I've also used the fixed base in my shop built router table, and had to fine tune the depth with the above table adjustment(not possible with my old Craftsman. Each time I use it I ask why I waited so long to get it. If your looking for a router seriously consider this combo kit, it allows you to have 2 routers for the price of one.

Great Router April 15, 2010 Wendy I am very pleased with this router. It is easy to adjust the height, easy to switch from standard to plunge mode, and feels very solidly built. The motor is stong and not overly noisy. I like it!
Chinese? March 30, 2010 Donnie Ramsey (Georgia) 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
I was routing a raised panel door today and the routed fell and dropped to the bottom of the Bosch routed table that is a piece of junk. The screws are stripped out and I will have to find longer screws and put nuts on the ends.
Surely Bosch can do better than this.
Best Bang for your Buck March 25, 2010 J. S. Hawkins (FORT WORTH, TX, US) I stumbled upon Bosch when the reverse went out on my small drill. I was in the market for a new tool, and I bought a Bosch. After holding the tool in my hand for the first time, I just couldn't get over the professional weight and feel of such a great priced tool.
Being sold on the Bosch brand name, I kept them in the running when I was researching routers. I have scoured many reviews across the Internet and there have been many reported problems with the switch ceasing to work - especially when used in a router table where the sawdust can really be a problem. Other than the switch issue, almost all other review aspects were excellent, so I decided to give it a go.
I couldn't be happier with the tool. I have put this router through many months of heavy use and I have not seen one problem. My only caveat would be that I did cut the corner out of a sandwich bag and, using electical tape, sealed off the switch. I did this purely due to the reviews I read, so I really couldn't tell you if there is a switch issue or not. What I can tell you is that, with a little preventative maintenance, my router does not have the problem.
The pro's:
1. The gradual start is an outstanding feature. No SURPRISE when you hit the switch.
2. The variable speed control works great and the router has an excellent range of speeds.
3. The depth control knob is easily accessible when mounted in a router table.
4. I have found the plunge base easy to work with.
5. Some don't like them, but, personally, I really like the wood handles on the fixed base.
6. This is just a solid tool.
Con's:
If any, I have only found one. The bits are a little hard to change. I personally don't change them that much. I have been installing chair railing and quarter round moldings, so these are big jobs with not many bit changes.
